I got a note from Evangeline today.
Here is what Evangeline had to say:
I have a friend who has a child aged 2 years old born in the US. But would like her child to have dual citizenship. Is this possible? If yes, what is the process?
Hi Evangeline,
You did not tell me what your friend’s citizenship is, so I can’t answer the question definitively. However, here are some scenarios:
- If your friend (or the child’s father) was a Philippine Citizen (or a dual citizen, one of which being Philippine Citizenship) on the day that the child was born, then yes, the child can be a dual citizen. In such a case, your friend needs to file a report of birth abroad with the Philippine Embassy or Consulate which serves her area, and the Philippine Citizenship will be recognized for the child.
- If your friend (or the child’s father) is a former Philippine Citizen who has been naturalized as a US Citizen, then she needs to file for Philippine Dual Citizenship for herself, and when the application is processed the child will also be included.
- If your friend (or the child’s father) is not a Philippine Citizen, and has never been a Philippine Citizen, then the child also cannot become a dual citizen.
I hope this helps resolve the question, Evangeline. Take care.
